Event description

Description

This symposium is part of a 3-stage focus on oncology event being held August 22nd by HC21. This workshop will seek to educate local employers about strategies and tools to manage employer cancer populations. Cancers, when combined, are a major cost driver of healthcare expense and loss of workplace productivity, including for employee ‘care givers’ of dependents with cancer. Cancer patients and their families are highly susceptible to stress, anxiety, and depression. Studies suggest patients have a better experience and better return-to-work results when their employers have well-developed policies and programs to support them and their related care givers. We also believe we have reached a new era in understanding cancer as a chronic disease, rather than strictly as a terminal illness. Employer polices, programs, and expectations need to be reconsidered in order to achieve better results with regard to employee well-being.

The intent of the workshop is to provide tools to help employers change the way oncology cases are managed, including return to work policies. We would like to present tools to help employers understand the prevalence of cancer in their populations, recognize the opportunities to improve detection and treatment, implement benefit designs that set reasonable out-of-pocket thresholds, establish programs that are holistic and coordinate care, provide support and services to patients and their families attempting to navigate the system, implement policies that allow for flexible work scheduling to accommodate cancer patients and/or their employee care givers, and implement programs that make returning to work more successful.

All attendees of the symposium are invited to stay for our Oncology on Canvas Mix and Mingle Art Show immediatley following in Bailey Hall of the Knoxville Museum of Art. More than 70 pieces of art created by persons affected by cancer; either patients or caregivers, will be on display for one night only. Refreshments and lite hors d'oeuvres will be served.
