Event description

Description

A workshop for both religious professionals and lay members ready to think differently about religious education and faith formation for the whole congregation.

Presented by: Karen Bellavance-Grace, New England Region UUA

Maybe you have noticed that your traditional Sunday School program is not as effective as it once was. You would not be alone. Many UU congregations (and those in other denominations as well!) are reporting erratic patterns of attendance and real challenges finding volunteers to support traditional RE programs. Some of our congregations are making bold changes, some are making small tweaks to traditional programs, and some of us are just doing what we can to keep the wheels turning.

This workshop is designed to introduce a shift away from reliance on age-segregated RE classes toward an integrated approach to whole congregation faith formation, one that supports families as critical partners in their children’s faith development, and takes seriously the lifelong journey of spiritual deepening and meaning making. A focus on Family Ministry invites multiple ways of providing not just curriculum, but opportunities to live into covenant, strengthen a sense of community and belonging, and engage spiritual practices and social justice as embodiments of our faith.

Join us for this workshop to define family ministry and imagine how a shift in focus might mitigate the perennial problems of erratic attendance and volunteer shortfalls that make some of our Sunday Schools unsustainable. We will discuss theory and practice and hear stories from some congregations already embracing this shift. We’ll think about managing change in congregations, and everyone will leave the workshop with some concrete ideas to take home and experiment with.

Pre-reading will be assigned and will be emailed to participants by March 1st or upon registration after that. We especially encourage teams to attend.

LOCATION: Unitarian Universalist Society of Greater Springfield at 245 Porter Lake Dr, Springfield, MA 01106

REGISTRATION FEE:

  • $25 per person when you register 1-4 from your congregation
  • $15 per person when you register 5 or more from your congregation

As learning takes root more effectively when four or more people from the same religious communities attend, you are encouraged to attend this workshop as a team.

While we know that not all individuals are in a position to pay these fees, since the learning is on behalf of the congregation, we assume that congregations will select and financially support participants who come. However, if these fees are prohibitive even to the congregation, please contact us at newengland@uua.org. We do not want cost to keep anyone away.

NOTE TO ALL ATTENDEES: Please bring your own bag lunch. Morning refreshments, drinks and afternoon snacks will be provided.

REGISTRATION CLOSES: Monday, March 11, or maximum capacity.

CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS:

  • If you or a teammate needs to cancel a registration before the event, please contact us as early as possible, by one week before the event at the latest, and a refund will be provided less a $5.00 administrative fee. Within one week of the event refunds less a $5.00 administrative fee will only be given in the case of illness or emergency. Refunds will not be available after the event for non attendance. We ask for your understanding in respecting this policy, which supports our organizational efforts and expenses.
  • The New England Region UUA may need to cancel an event in the case of low enrollment. We will contact you well in advance of the event and provide prompt, full refund of registration fees.
