Event description

Description

The (ES)2 STEM Learning Lab at IUPUI is conducting a study of the Career Considerations of High-Achieving, Underrepresented Minority, High School Students (IRB Protocol #1706877456). The goal of this study is to provide an empirically grounded understanding of the factors that influence students educational and career interests. The study is conducted under the direction of Jomo W. Mutegi, associate professor of science education at IUPUI and Principal Investigator of the (ES)2 STEM Learning Lab (www.es2rp.org).

To be eligible students must be... (a) high school juniors or seniors, (b) African American, Latino, or Native American, and (c) planning to attend college. Parents of eligible students are also eligible. To participate, identify a focus group date and complete the registration.

Each focus group will last for two -hours. There will be 5-6 participants per focus group. Focus group discussions will center on three broad areas: students career interests and barriers, the people and organizations that influence students’ career decisions, and the fit between STEM teaching and students’ life goals. Findings from the study will be used to help STEM education researchers provide better outreach to promising high school students.

Refreshments will be served, and participants will receive a $45 gift card for completing the study.
