The FNGLA Certified Horticulture Professional (FCHP) program is Florida's industry standard for measuring horticultural knowledge on everything from PlantID and pest ID to landscape management (including fertilizer application, irrigation, design, and choosing the right plant).
FCHP promotes professionalism among horticulture professionals, including nursery, greenhouse, landscape and retail garden center employees. The program has been in existence since 1984 with more than 1,700 certified professionals in Florida, the southeast and the Bahamas.
FNGLA's Certified Horticulture Professional (FCHP) program was updated in 2006 to integrate principles of the Florida Friendly Green Industry Best Management Practices (GI-BMP) program and has been endorsed by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection as incorporating all necessary aspects of the GI-BMP training program. Anyone who earns an FCHP certification can now also receive a GI-BMP certificate of training, which is required for the Limited Commercial Fertilizer Applicator Certificate required by the Florida Department of Agriculture.
Upon receiving your FCHP Certificate you can submit a request for a GI-BMP certificate on this Website Link.
The course can be used as the foundation for a competency based pay system. Employers that wish to use graduated steps for performance pay can base their pay levels on levels of certification: FCHP, FCMT, FCLT, FCLC, ISA Arborist, etc.
Classes are held Tues & Thursday evening from 6pm to 9pm starting Tuesday January 10th through Thursday March 9th, 2017. Exam dates are March 7th & 9th. Course syllabus calendar can be previewed here. Finalized syllabus will be given on the first night of class.
|FNGLA's FCHP Manual was developed through a combined effort of practicing industry professionals, the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences and industry educators. It is an excellent resource and informational tool for troubleshooting and answering questions involving proper plant use, plant problems and landscape management.|
The manual was updated in 2010. The update of the FCHP Manual contains the newest information on best management practices, Florida-friendly principles, fertilizer rules and irrigation efficiency and has been endorsed by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and all five water management districts.
It is best if you order the manual before class and start reading it before the beginning of class. However, manuals will be available for purchase the first night of class if a student does not have a manual beforehand.

To make the most use of class time it is required that students have read the chapter to be discussed before class. It would also be wise to fill out a KWL worksheet before class so discussion can target specific areas that may need to be clarified. You can find the K-W-L worksheet here.
The FCHP program is a core horticulture program designed for persons working in the horticulture industry. A minimum of 90 days working in industry is required for taking the exam.
