What’s Newton’s first law of following? Come to this series to find out! This month, we'll focus on the science of momentum and counterbalance. We'll learn how to create, store and release energy, then use tone and leverage to bend that energy to our nefarious dance purposes. Come join us for a month of dance physics to make your dancing more controlled, efficient, and dynamic.

May 9th - Ted
May 16th - Paul and Heidi

Dave Madison discovered partnered dance through Lindy Hop back in 1996 and then found Blues while dancing at the Austin Lindy Exchange in 2001. Soon after, he became instrumental in the origins of the contemporary Blues house party which eventually led to our formal Blues Scene. As the Blues scene became formalized, David became one of the first teachers in the scene and was instrumental in helping shape Blues Dancing as an art form. He now travels around the world helping Blues scenes grow as well as introducing Blues Dancing to new scenes. His workshops have created quite a following for his teaching and have been received with much positive feedback. Read more...

As a teacher, Ted Maddry has helped thousands of students improve their dancing and sometimes even their lives. In his classes, he will challenge you to develop dance technique, experiment and take risks in your dancing all the while maintaining a comfortable & entertaining classroom environment. Ted is also the Ringleader of Beyond Blues, a cornerstone of Blues Dance in San Francisco. Ted actively works with a great team to spread his love of Blues Dance around the Bay Area and to develop Camp Blues as the very best way to learn social dance quickly. Read more...

Paul Mandel first started swing dancing in Santa Cruz, CA in 2005. After learning lindy hop in college from Sarah Spence Adams, he was dragged to a blues house party in 2006 and has been hooked ever since. More than anything, he loves establishing a crystal-clear connection with his partner and discovering their unique blend of musicality together.

He has won several competitions including first place with Kelly Pavao at Blues Blaze 2010, first place with Joy Arico at Mile High Blues 2011, and first place with Kara Fabina at Bambloozled 2011. Amanda Gruhl and Paul Mendel also placed first in the choreography competition atEnter the Blues with their choreography to "I Put a Spell on You" by Nina Simone and went on to perform it and teach an excerpt at Down Home Blues 2010.

Heidi began dancing and teaching in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1999 and has been dancing, teaching, and performing ever since. She now lives in San Francisco, California, where she teaches classes, workshops, and private lessons.

Heidi's expertise includes Lindy Hop and Blues dance and she enjoys helping students of all ages and ability levels improve their dancing. Admired for her clear explanation of fundamentals, Heidi brings to all her classes and workshops not only a focus on solid techniques, but more important, a love of dance and a dedication to the learning process.

Nicole has been a dancer her whole life. Ballet, west coast swing, lindy hop and tango are all dances that have driven her need for expression through movement. But when she discovered blues 4 years ago, it was love at first dance. This unique dance style that combined creativity, freedom of movement, and a strong dance connection with her partner inspired her in a way no other dance had before. After a few years, she couldn’t withstand the draw of the dance any longer and started her life as a vagabonding dance instructor.

Nicole’s love and passion for expression through dance propels her through life. She brings that same zeal to her students through challenging but inspiring classes that encourage her students to learn, play and grow as dancers and as people.

Michelle Richter has been dancing and studying dance as a discipline for over 20 years. Her background in ballet and modern dance has inspired her to focus on technique combined with creative movement in her teaching style. She has studied the movement of the human body in many forms of dance, including African-Caribbean, Jazz, Contact Improvisation, Salsa, Belly Dance, Hip Hop, Tango, and various Ballroom styles. Michelle also enjoys performing and creating choreography. For the last 12 years, her main focus has been Lindy Hop and Blues dancing. Her teaching focuses on connection, attitude and self-expression, proper body mechanics, and one-on-one attention. As a Nationally Certified Massage Therapist, Michelle’s extensive knowledge of anatomy/physiology compliments her dance instruction in a unique way.
