Startup Quest™ is an innovative 10-week, hands-on program that provides an introduction to the process required to start a business for unemployed and underemployed degree-holding individuals. Startup Quest™ is an experiential, team-based laboratory training program in which participants form teams headed by an experienced entrepreneur mentor to develop business plans for simulated companies based on real inventions and technologies. Each team is matched with a technology generated by a Florida university, federal lab or NASA.
Join FloridaWorks for an Introductory Workshop to learn more about the Startup Quest™ program and eligibility requirements, and hear past participants' and mentors' experiences in the pilot program. You will also hear from experienced entrepreneurs on how they created new companies that grew into successful enterprises. Presenters include key organizations involved in building the innovation community, such as FloridaWorks, the Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce, the University of Florida Office of Technology Licensing and the UF Innovation Hub.
Eligible participants will be selected to engage in this unique program where they will:
• Gain valuable entrepreneurial skills• Learn how to write a business plan
• Collaborate in a team environment
• Meet, network and learn from experienced entrepreneurs• Compete in an investor contest with prizes
Not everyone who applies will be selected to participate.* To qualify for this program, participants must meet the following minimum requirements:
• Unemployed or underemployed;• 18 years of age or older;
• U.S. citizen or be legally authorized to work in the United States;
• Male participants over the age of 18, born on or after January 1, 1960, must be registered with the Selective Service• Post-secondary degree (Doctorate, Masters, Bachelors preferred)• Commitment to the program in its entirety (including a one-year evaluative tracking period)

Pilot Information: In 2011 FloridaWorks developed Startup Quest™ in partnership with the University of Florida Office of Technology Licensing, the Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce, 14 entrepreneurs and 12 investors. 83 participants were put into the final round of training which consisted of 13 teams each with a successful entrepreneur/mentor.
Funded through a Workforce Florida, Inc., grant of $175,000, the pilot was so successful that in 2012 FloridaWorks was awarded a $12 million grant by the U.S. Department of Labor to create a consortium of eight workforce regions to replicate the success throughout Florida. The participating regions implementing this innovative program are FloridaWorks, Jacksonville, Daytona, Brevard, Ft. Lauderdale, Tampa, St. Pete and Tallahassee.
Amount of investment dollars for startups from private sector funds = $124,400
*Startup Quest is part of an evaluation study funded by the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration Workforce Innovation Fund. Participants will be selected from among eligible applicants. Data collected will remain confidential and will be used for statistical purposes only.
