Florence Price Birthday Celebration
Event Information
About this event
The Dunbar Historic Neighborhood Association celebrates the classical compositions of Little Rock's own Florence B. Price, and her vital role in Arkansas cultural heritage.
In 1887, Florence Price was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, and resided in the Dunbar Historic District. There, she attended Allison Presbyterian Church. At age 14, Florence graduated from high school as class valedictorian and was admitted to the New England Conservatory of Music. In 1906, she graduated at age 16 with a diploma in organ performance, piano.
Price won the Wanamaker award in 1933 with her composition, Symphony in E Minor, and as a result, she became the first female composer of African-American descent to have a symphonic work performed by a national symphony orchestra. In 1934, she performed in the Dunbar (High) Magnet School auditorium.
We invite you to celebrate Florence B. Prices' birthday, and the official declaration of Florence Price Day in the state of Arkansas by Governor Asa Hutchinson.
The concert will be at Mosiac Templars Cultural Center, in Little Rock, Ark., from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m, and will feature Price's compositions. Our featured musical guests are concert pianists Dr. Karen Walryn from Washington D.C. (Howard University) and Linda Holzer, DMus., Nesheeda Golden, (Mezzo-Soprano), and Ronald W. McDaniel, ll (Baritone).
