Description

Floating walk

A boat journey on the Great Ouse

Caroline Wendling

11 July - 15 July 2017

Departing The Quay, St. Ives at 7.30pm each evening

Please join us for an enchanted boat journey along the Great Ouse River at dusk on a summer’s evening. Created by artist Caroline Wendling, specially for St. Ives, the event evokes the stories of the Persian bishop after whom the town is named.

Travelling along the course of the river to the ‘End of the World’ and back, hearing magical stories and through mysterious riverside encounters, you will experience lingering vibrations of Ivo's journey in the 7th century from Persia to the East of England. Floating Walk was created and distilled from the imagination of the children of St Ives, with whom Wendling has worked over the past few months, as well as from research in national and regional archives.

Floating Walk is part of ‘An invitation to travel’, a project developed in collaboration with fellow artist Sally Stenton, exploring ideas of movement, memory and place on the Great Ouse river, in the town of St Ives and on Holt Island. For future events visit www.invitationtotravel.info

Places are strictly limited so please book in advance; details below.

Caroline Wendling is an artist living in Cambridgeshire. She has devised several participatory walks in the landscape in other parts of the British Isles and in New York. She creates sensory and evocative experiences for participants, so that the walks remain in memory long after their completion. Her project ‘White Wood’ in Huntly, Scotland was awarded the Commendation for Arts in Public Spaces from the Saltire Society in Edinburgh.

Caroline will be joined by other performers whose identity will gradually be revealed.

‘If we have retained an element of dream in our memories, …It is as though something fluid had collected our memories and we ourselves were dissolved in the fluid of the past.’

Gaston Bachelard, The Poetics of Space

The event will be about 75 minutes long, and no walking is required during this time.

Price £15 per person

Drinks and Persian patisseries included

An ‘Invitation to Travel’ is supported by Arts Council England, Cambridgeshire County Council, St Ives Town Team and Wysing Arts Centre.
