Event description

Description

Join us for a personal and collective moment of remembrance, reflection, and gratitude for the pets who have enriched our lives.

BACKGROUND

Floating Lantern Pet Memorial Bellingham was established in 2015 as a way to help members of our community remember and celebrate the lives of beloved pets of all varieties.

The concept for this event was influenced by Floating Lantern Memorials (www.floatinglanternmemorials.com), which in turn was influenced by Lantern Floating Hawaii (www.lanternfloatinghawaii.com). We are deeply indebted to Jannette Matos of Floating Lantern Memorials for her generous guidance.

FLOAT A LANTERN

If you would like to decorate and float a lantern, please register in advance. Only a small number of non-reserved lanterns will be available on the day of the event.

If you cannot be present but would like to have a lantern floated for you, you may reserve an absentee lantern. You may pick up and decorate the paper in advance, or a volunteer will decorate the paper for you.

DAY OF THE EVENT - HOW IT WORKS

Please arrive at the park between 6:30 and 7:00 PM. Please dress appropriately for the weather after sunset, and consider bringing a lawn chair, cushion or blanket. A headlamp or flashlight is also recommended.

Please do not bring your dog, or any other pet, to this event. This event is about honoring our departed companions, not the ones we are lucky enough to still have with us.

At check-in you will receive a 18" X 6" sheet of transparent paper that can be decorated with memories of your pet. Pens and markers will be provided for your use. You may also bring a photocopy of your pet's picture (non-returnable) to attach to the paper. A color printer/scanner will be available on-site for folks who only have photos on photo paper. You may scan your photograph and create a paper copy for your lantern allowing you to keep the original. (Photo paper doesn't allow light to shine through and so does not work well on a lantern.)

When it is complete, volunteers will help you place your decorated paper into a lantern structure.

Then whenever you are ready (physically and emotionally) a lighted path flanked by several hand-bell ringers will guide you to the release point on the beach. Volunteers will be at the release point to assist you.

You are encouraged to stay as long as you like to watch the lanterns and visit with other participants.

At approximately 9 PM, volunteers in kayaks will begin retrieving all lanterns from the lake.

The floating lanterns are made of reusable material, and are lit by LED lights. Every single lantern will be retrieved from the water right after the event and a crew will check again the following morning. Reusable parts will be cleaned and stored for future use.

The paper sleeves cannot be returned to you.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is there an admission fee? No. Anyone who wants to attend and view the event is invited. However, if you want to decorate and float a lantern then there is a fee to help defray the cost of this event.

May I bring my dog? Please do not bring your dog, or any other pet, to this event. This event is about honoring our departed companions, not the ones we are lucky enough to still have with us.

Will the event take place rain or shine? Any severe weather delays will be communicated via e-mail.

Can I bring my own lantern to float? Out of concern for the safety of the participants and the environment, outside lanterns will not be allowed. Our lanterns had to be pre-approved due to Fire Department’s restrictions.

Do you use real candles? No. For the safety of the environment and all those involved, lanterns will be lit by amber-colored flickering LED lights that provide a visual effect similar to real candles.

What happens to the lanterns after the ceremony? Every single lantern will be retrieved from the water right after the event. Reusable parts will be cleaned and stored for future use. The paper sleeves will be respectfully collected and cremated.

Is Floating Lantern Pet Memorial Bellingham a non-profit organization? No. Radiant Heart After-Care for Pets is a for-profit venture that believes in giving back to the community. It is our privilege to sponsor this event.
