Description

Flash Dance: A Flash Fiction Workshop

This workshop invites writers to explore and expand their writing process by using the rhythm and non-judgment of dancing to write flash fiction. Initially, we will explore the following questions: why do humans dance?; how does rhythm influence sentence construction?; how can we use a physical processes (walking. dancing, running) to generate ideas on paper?

We will then talk about the constraints of the form—flash asks writers to write less than 1k word stories. What is appealing about an extremely short story? What is the line between prose poem and flash fiction? Can we write a story in the three and a half minutes of a song? Can we generate ideas by dancing? Can we write first drafts that we don’t judge? Can we write like we dance? Without caring if anyone is watching? Can we put energy into static words and make them resonate like a song?

This will be a fun, safe, supportive workshop where vulnerability is encouraged and admired.
