About this event
FIVE TOWNS: ONE BOOK. Bringing our communities together for an important conversation around The Sum of Us by Heather McGhee.
Join us Thursday Feb 17th at 7pm for a discussion focusing on Chapter 8: The Same Sky. Our guests for this exploration of environmental justice are Jennifer Mitchell, Executive Director of The Hope Program, and Paul Presendieu, Outreach Manager at Sustainable Westchester. How can we recognize that we all live under "The Same Sky"? How does racism shape environmental policy? How can we build an environmental justice movement that benefits ALL of us? Panelist bios here.
This will be a hybrid event with a limited number of in-person tickets available as well as a virtual option to participate.
New York Times Bestseller THE SUM OF US: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together offers a powerful exploration of inequality and the lesson that generations of Americans have failed to learn: Racism has a cost for everyone—not just for people of color. The zero-sum paradigm is explored in depth —the idea that progress for some of us must come at the expense of others. But in unlikely places of worship and work, there is proof of the "Solidarity Dividend": the benefits we gain when people come together across race to accomplish what we simply can’t do on our own. Author Heather McGhee will only be visiting on March 27th - tickets here.
Sponsored by CURE (The Coalition for Understanding Racism through Education), LMC Media, Westchester Library System and these five community libraries: Harrison, Larchmont, Mamaroneck, New Rochelle, and Rye. With generous support from the Westchester County Board of Legislators.
