Event description
All levels, no experience needed to learn how to Slackline, and gain the fundamental skills to make you a better slacker!

About this Event

Join FitLo at Harvard Gulch Park for a Slackline workshop with Jerrod (aka @unicornasana)! There is no experience needed to learn how to Slackline. All are welcome including children ages 5+ accompanied with their parents and dogs (on a leash).

Why Slackline?

Well first, slacklining is a blast and super cool (obvs). Also, did you know slacklining builds functional core strength and body awareness which will improve your focus, balance and coordination. Which means slacklining is fantastic cross training that will enhance your other athletic adventures, other mind body disciplines (like yoga and meditation), day-to-day life activities (like chasing your kids).

What to bring:

  • Light Workout clothes
  • Water in a water bottle
  • Shoes not required but if more comfortable you can wear, suggested flat shoe like a converse or vans.
  • Wear sunscreen and sunprotection (hat, sunglasses, etc)

There’s a porta potty at park as well as golf clubhouse and Rec center for bathrooms.

About the Instructor:

Jerrod (@unicornasana) | Kindness Yoga Instructor + Certified YogaSlackersInstructor

In 2014 I was introduced to my first formal yoga class ever. It was tough and very humbling when I fell out of every pose. One day after a hot yoga class, exhausted and sweaty I walked my dogs around the neighborhood to cool off from the intense heat of the class. Little did I know how much that walk would change my life. When passing the local park there was a group of young kids that had a slackline set up, although I had no idea what it was. My eyes stayed glued to them playing as I thought to myself “that would really help my balance for yoga”. As soon as I got home I google searched “urban tightope walking” and found slacklining. Although at that time, slacklining was moving toward the mainstream it was still hard to find slacklines in stores. I went to three different REI’s before finding a 2 inch ratchet at a sports store.

I got home excited as could be to try, went to the park to set up and picked the same trees that the kids were using earlier, but didn’t really read instructions so the line came out angled and was way to tight and long. I played for five minutes before quitting. How could those little kids make it look so fun and easy? A few days passed and me and my roommates were having a 4th of July BBQ at our place, the line got set up again for our group to try, and when I saw that everyone sucked, it became a lot more fun to try and “walk the line” and be less serious. We played for a few hours that evening and I definitely caught the slack bug.

It took a few months to learn how to walk across the line, I would wear shoes and look down all the time. In late May of 2015 I was introduced to YogaSlackers teachers at a local yoga festival and my mind was again blown as they were playing on 1 inch lines and doing so much more than walking. And although tree pose, sit starts and laying on the line aren’t overly crazy to me now, at the time it blew me away and I dedicated myself to slackline yoga combining my two biggest passions. I took the YogaSlackers teacher training the next opportunity it was available in May of 2016.

Sharing slacklining to others has become a passion of mine. Since graduating from YogaSlackers teacher training I have taught at over forty events/festivals around the United States. I host weekly meet ups at local parks in the Denver Metro area, workshops at Kindness Collective and monthly SlackJam’s at Denver Circus Collective downtown. Come see why it’s so cool to be a slacker!
