Event description
The Marin County Restorative Justice Program is a victim-offender dialogue program working towards repairing, restoring and healing.

About this event

The Marin County Restorative Justice Program is a victim-offender dialogue program which offers all parties involved in or affected by a crime an opportunity to participate in a restorative justice process to address issues related to the incident.

Restorative Justice is an approach. It is not a particular program or blueprint, not exclusively for young offenders and less serious offenses, not necessarily an alternative to the criminal justice system or incarceration and is not easy or "just a slap on the wrist". The program aims to provide diversion level services for persons charged with lower level crimes in the adult system. It also offers restorative services to persons currently on probation and to the victims of their crimes. The Restorative Justice Program currently works on misdemeanor and felony cases (with the exception of domestic violence cases).

Our speaker will be Cindy Ayala, Restorative Justice Program Coordinator for the Marin County Probation Department.

Cindy Ayala was born in Los Angeles and raised in Canada. She is quadri-lingual, bicultural and studied Criminology and Restorative Justice at a postgraduate level at the University of Montreal. She knew very early on that she wanted to work with offenders and victims of crime to help them heal, grow and move forward in their lives in a more positive way.

Her career in the Restorative Justice field began in 2006, when she began working for the Church Council on Justice and Corrections, a non-profit that promotes education on restorative justice. She became President of the organization and in 2013, moved to the capital city of Ottawa to work with the Restorative Justice Division at the National Headquarters of Correctional Services Canada. She is currently the Restorative Justice Program Coordinator for the Marin County Probation Department in San Rafael, California.
