Speakers and Topics:

A First Responder Marriage-Surviving Critical Incidents - Retired Lieutenant Cathy Bustos , Cedar Park PD and Corporal Javier Bustos, Austin PD-Javier and Cathy Bustos are certified in Law Enforcement Peer Support. Throughout their careers they have experienced many critical Incidents separately and together. On August 18th, 2010 they experienced the trauma of a line of duty death for a fellow officer and friend at Cathy’s police department in Cedar Park, TX. A month later on September 25th, 2010, Javier was in an Officer Involved Shooting in Austin, TX. Cathy & Javier were thrust into a new and changed world. They had to adjust their lives for the “new normal”. It is important officers get help in the early days after a critical incident. The days of the macho “shaking it off” are in the past. With a combined 46 years of law enforcement experience their mission is to help other officers and their families deal with the stress of Critical Incidents. They serve as Peer Support Team members at the Bill Blackwood Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas, Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, TX for quarterly Post Critical Incident Seminars. They volunteer at National Police Week in Washington, DC as support services. They are certified Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Instructors. They write articles for law enforcement publications. They appeared in the documentary "Officer Involved"

From the Ashes- Cody Schroeder, firefighter, Beaumont Fire Department- A general reflection of the struggle that I didn't know I was going through. From great times to low times and a new beginning of life and purpose. Cody was hired as a Beaumont firefighter in Oct 2000. He was married in 2004 and had a daughter in 2005. She was born in Arlington Texas, during Hurricane Rita. Cody was trapped in a house fire Dec 2007, and immediately flown to Galveston and admitted into the University of Texas Blocker Burn Unit (UTMB) where he spent 6 weeks in hospital. Cody had ten to twelve surgeries and later released to stay in a condo on the island. He was able to return to my home, Beaumont, Texas, in April of 2008. However, his rehab and surgeries continued at the Blocker Burn Unit until July of 2008. Cody returned to full duty as a firefighter in August of 2008. Through the years Cody has struggled and dealt with alcoholism and depression. He has so many people around him helping him through the years and because of their support, he is still alive!

Strong Foundations, Strong Families, Strong First Responders- Wendy C Norris, CEO of the Texas LODD Task Force- In this presentation, participants will learn the importance of developing and implementing a resiliency and support program for both the first responder and the first responder family. Wendy Norris is the CEO of the Texas LODD Task Force. She is a Master Certified Chaplain & Instructor, Presiding Officer on the Governor’s Advisory Panel for the Star of Texas Awards for injured and fallen first responders, and serves as a chaplain and first responder for the Forest Bend Fire Department. For over two decades He saw the worst of society as many of you have also seen and he worked with some of the finest people in Texas. It made him stronger or so he thought. Every time he would climb to the proverbial mountain top, he would eventually fall into the valley. From struggles with his family life, his health, his faith, and the loss of friends Bryan has made it his mission to help the law enforcement community live better lives.
