Speakers and Topics:

"Post Traumatic Growth, A Positive Change" - Mike Washington, Seattle Firefighter- I am You, You are Me, a Post Traumatic Growth Story-Mike Washington, Seattle Firefighter (Ret.)- Mike recently retired from the Seattle Fire Department after 27 years where he was a firefighter and Team lead with the Seattle Fire Departments Critical Incident Stress Management Team for 25 years which provides basic and immediate mental health assistance to firefighters, military, and civilians in the wake of high impact stressful situations. Mike will take you on his life journey and describe how he grew from the traumatic incidents he endured throughout his life and how you can make a positive change for yourself and others. Mike was recently featured in "Upstanders", a collection of short stories created by Starbuck's, showing various courageous people in America.

Financially Fit- Marco Parzych (Lt Col, USAF Ret.), Founder & Executive Director of Mission Ready Finances - This presentation is aimed at restoring financial hope and encouraging all why they should, and how they can, do better with their personal finances. His goal is to serve as a catalyst, inspiring audiences to take action by presenting information in a new way that gets them to start thinking differently, believing that wealth building is possible for all and then taking the steps to get on a brighter financial path forward. Mission Ready Finances is a nationwide nonprofit 501(c)(3) with a vision of financial hope, peace and success for all who bravely serve our nation as military members or first responders. Marco is a retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel, having had the distinct honor and privilege of leading forces into combat both in the air and on the ground.

Surviving the Job- Officer Steve Redmond, Seattle Police Department- We have all heard about PTSD, cumulative stress, secondary trauma/compassion fatigue, and addictions, but how can we prevent these issues? Steve will relate his own stories as a first responder, and describe the negative impact these challenges have on our lives, careers, and families. Learn about methods in which we can prevent these issues and the negative impacts they have, with awareness and good self-care. A review of treatment options for an individual or family will also be discussed. We need to change the culture of "dismissing" mental health issues when we see a co-worker, friend, or family member in crisis. “If you see something, say something.” Steve Redmond is an officer for the Seattle Police Department and has worked for Seattle PD since 1992. During his career with Seattle, he has worked as a patrol officer, FTO, mountain bike officer, DUI squad officer, traffic officer, and as a motorcycle officer. In August of 2013, he began creating Code 4 Northwest, which is a 24/7 confidential Crisis referral hotline for first responders and their families. Steve wanted to ensure that all Washington State active or retired first responders, EMS, corrections, civilian supports personnel, and their families had access to the best resources that could be offered.

Survive & Thrive: A Path through Trauma into Resilience-Ryan Dedmon, Outreach Director, 911 Training Institute- A former dispatcher will discuss the accumulation of stress from personal loss and professional trauma that he experienced. His personal story of survival and journey to healing will help empower all first responders to seek peer support services and mental health treatment to build their resilience. Ryan Dedmon is a retired police dispatcher from Southern California. He currently serves as the Outreach Director for the 911 Training Institute and as the CIT Training Coordinator at the Regional Criminal Justice Training Center at Golden West College in Huntington Beach, CA. Ryan is a California POST-certified instructor and holds a Master’s Degree in Forensic Psychology. He blends his education and experience behind the console to help first-responders recover and grow from post-traumatic stress.

Embodied Trauma & You - Removing The Armor- Jeff Masters, Founder and Director of The Masters Institute – We carry the imprints of our traumatic experiences in our physical body. These “embodied experiences” are powerful forces that shape and color our perception. During this lecture attendees will be introduced to their body's capacity to receive, carry and store life experiences. Experiences that then color our view of the world and dictate our reactions. Attendees will be introduced to the distinct types of stress and how each influences our mind and body and take a deeper look at the neurobiological responses that occur during a focused yoga practice, including a few simple techniques for becoming aware of and beginning the process of releasing these deeply held patterns. Jeff Masters is the founder and director of the Masters Institute, an organization dedicated to guiding students and clients to a state of vibrant health, integrated wellness and fully actualized potential. With over the 40 years of mentorship, teaching and clinical experience, Jeff’s work bridges Eastern and Western science, medicine and psychobiology. By synthesizing his military experience, a life-long yoga practice, yoga therapy certification, somatic-based therapeutic certifications and trauma specific training, Jeff is able to guide clients beyond the mental experience of trauma, to the threads of the experience that are locked in their bodies. Jeff has had the honor of sharing his knowledge of embodied trauma and the tools to address it, with organizations such as the 1st Responder Conferences, the International Association of Firefighters, FBI National Academy Associates, Chicago Police Academy, Seattle Fire Department, California Division of Forestry and more.

Trauma and Resilience - Tania Glenn, PsyD, LCSW- Dr. Tania Glenn is the president of Tania Glenn and Associates (TGA), PA a clinical practice in Austin, TX and Phoenix, AZ that is focused on promoting resilience, critical incident response and peer support team training and activation. As a leading national clinician in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Dr. Glenn specializes in working with emergency responders, military and the aviation community. This workshop is designed to educate participants on the types and effects of stress that confront professionals who serve in stressful occupations. The course employs hands-on, reality based examples that are both useful and enlightening, as well as lessons learned from the experiences of the instructor. Participants will be provided with the necessary tools to recognize and understand the signs and symptoms of stress, to recognize the types of incidents that will need follow-up care, and effective ways for managing stress.

Developing a Behavioral Health Program- Paul Luizzi, Goodyear Fire Department Chief- Paul will give you an overview of how to develop a comprehensive behavioral health program for first responders. This discussion will demonstrate how the Goodyear Fire Department developed a comprehensive behavioral wellness program from scratch to a program that is sought after by other departments. Paul Luizzi, Paul has served as the Fire Chief for the City of Goodyear since 2013. He has also served in a number of leadership positions for the City of Goodyear to include Interim Deputy City Manager, Deputy Fire Chief, and Battalion Chief.
