From Eleanor Roosevelt knitting in the galleries of congress to Ida McKinley crocheting her trademark slippers outside her husband’s office, First Ladies have often used needlework to keep their hands and minds busy as they were faced with the weight of the White House. Join Debra Scala Giokas for an exploration of crochet and knit work by the First Ladies. Debra will dig deep into her book Ladies, First: Common Thread which looks at the needlework pursuits of 18 First Ladies through photographs of their creations and discussions of their lives and challenges.

Debra Scala Giokas is a professional member of the Crochet Guild of America. She earned her B.A. in English from Stony Brook University and began a career in marketing communications where she writes every day.
