Chicago Symphonic Winds
“It bothers me enormously that the wind ensemble and band medium is not yet perceived by our culture, by our musical establishment and by our tastemakers and cultural leaders as an important, viable, and integral part of this country’s musical life. … The next step must be the establishment of professional wind ensembles and band. … Where are all these fabulous young wind players going to go professionally? They can’t all become high school teachers, nor should they. … The symphony orchestras are full … a kid today can dream of playing in the Chicago Symphony because the institution of the symphony orchestra exists … Unfortunately, a young student can’t even dream about the wind ensemble because it doesn’t exist for the professional musician.”
-- Gunther Schuller; An address to the CBDNA National Conference, February 13, 1981, Ann Arbor, Michigan
34 years after Mr. Schuller’s address to the CBDNA National Conference, we continue to face the same issues within the wind band medium.
Dedicated to furthering the experience and tradition of wind music, Chicago Symphonic Winds was founded in 2014 to fill the need of quality performances of wind repertoire in the Chicagoland area. As a relevant presence within the community, CSW is actively involved in educational outreach and performances as well as partnerships with local businesses and community programs.
In its first year, CSW presented over a dozen successful performances that built on collaborative partnerships, focused on educational outreach, and teamed up with local businesses. Now entering its second year, CSW continues to gain support and momentum with larger concerts and more exciting opportunities to get involved!
