For the next First Friday on February 3rd, we will be watching Citizenfour -- a documentary on government surveillance and whistleblowing, giving audiences unprecedented access to filmmaker Laura Poitras and journalist Glenn Greenwald’s encounters with Edward Snowden in Hong Kong, as he hands over classified documents providing evidence of mass indiscriminate and illegal invasions of privacy by the National Security Agency.
Citizenfour places you in the room with Poitras, Greenwald, and Snowden as they attempt to manage the media storm raging outside, forced to make quick decisions that will impact their lives and all of those around them. Citizenfour not only shows you the dangers of governmental surveillance—it makes you feel them. After seeing the film, you will never think the same way about your phone, email, credit card, web browser, or profile, ever again.
This is a child-friendly event!
A potluck style dinner will be served starting at 6pm and the film screening will start at 6:30pm. If you plan on bringing a dish please let us know when you register so we can meet a variety of dietary needs.
First Friday Forums are a monthly potluck dinner, documentary screening, and discussion hosted by the Baltimore Gathering of the Commons, a project of the Baltimore Gift Economy. We want to bring people together in a shared space where we can use our hearts and minds to explore shared assets and issues in Baltimore City.
The First Friday Forum is hosted on the first friday of every month and we select each month's film and topic at a public planning meeting on the third Monday of each month at 10:30am in the UMB Community Engagement Center.
