Event description

Description

At our March installment of First Friday Art participants will receive materials and instruction to complete one medium or tiny sized shrine in class, and a package to take home for a friend or to make another pocket-sized shrine another day.

These tiny treasures are simple and inexpensive to make, but with some thought, can offer a big message in a small package. They can be created as a charming variation on the Latin American “talisman,” a rectagular assemblage of indigenous and colonial folk-magic charms often filled with religious text and art. Or, they can serve as a neat alternative to a card – you can even put in a tiny letter. They may be carried on the person or placed on a private altar, or they can sit quietly on your bedside table and evoke pleasant dreams of peace, luck, creativity, love. Matchbox shrines are simply pocket-sized themed works of art. Whatever medium you work in, pocket shrines are only limited by the imagination.

Instructor Jen Bracy received her MFA in 1997 and has been teaching visual communication design since, twelve of those years in Oregon. Areas of expertise include logo/identity design, typography and graphic design history.

Jen’s fine art has oscillated over the years from painting to digital media to book arts to paper collage, and recent works combine many of these media with monotype printmaking. Jen’s work often explores the influence and eternal wisdom of nature, its influence on our patterns and symbols, and the tension between humans and the natural environment.
