CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

SESSION ONE 9:15 am – 10:45 am

101. Unit President Part 1 (two-part workshop - register for both 101 & 301)

Congratulations on being elected PTA President! In this two-part class we will review the basics of PTA policies and procedures and learn tips for unit management to help you meet the responsibilities of your new role. We will provide you with everything you need to successfully lead your unit efficiently and effectively.

102. Unit Treasurer Part 1 (two-part workshop – register for both 102 & 302)

Review all responsibilities of the unit treasurer over the course of an entire financial year. Topics include banking, budget, fundraising, contracts, money handling and financial reports

103. Parliamentarian Basics Part 1 (two-part workshop - register for both 103 & 303)

Learn basic parliamentary procedure and duties of the parliamentarian. Learn what's in your bylaws and the procedure for amending them. We will also cover nominations and elections.

104. Secretary

Learn the role and the job responsibilities of being the secretary, including: how to prepare minutes that are correct, concise, and complete; what should be “for the record’; what to leave out; how to approve, correct and file the master copy of the minutes; how to deal with correspondence; duties as an executive board member. Plan to review a brief meeting example and prepare sample minutes. This workshop will also include a small segment covering the tasks and responsibilities of the historian position.

105. Membership Basics

Everything you need to conduct a successful year-long PTA membership campaign. This workshop will include procedures, timelines, incentives, and resources. Learn tips for asking people to join and receive sample materials.

106. You’re on the PTA Board, What Now?

Board members are never alone. Come and learn the basics of all board positions, how to work with board members efficiently and effectively, and what resources are available to get the job done. Learn how to have fun and productive meetings all while fulfilling your roles and responsibilities as elected/appointed PTA leaders.

SESSION TWO 12:00 pm – 1:15 pm

201. Tax Compliance Essentials

Are those tax forms overwhelming and confusing? Learn how to complete them correctly and file on time. Keep your PTA unit in compliance and good standing with PTA, the IRS, the State of California, and the Office of the Attorney General.

202. Effective Advocacy – It’s in the BAG!

Effective advocacy is all in the BAG - the Big Audacious (& Achievable) Goal! Learn more about what advocacy is, how to identify goals that are both audacious and achievable, and the steps needed to be effective PTA advocates at the unit and council level. We will cover information on what PTA positions and authorities are and how to use them, how to do a Study Committee, and other basic to advanced info. This workshop is for anyone and everyone who is interested in PTA advocacy at all levels.

203. Mental Health Awareness

“…an estimated 49.5 percent of adolescents have had a mental health disorder at some point in their lives. The good news is that promoting positive mental health can prevent some problems.” (HHS.gov) Now more than ever it is essential that we prioritize our youth’s mental health. Learn more about this important topic and share ideas and best practices for supporting the mental wellness of the young people in our lives.

204. Diversity, Equity and inclusion

In a rapidly changing landscape of volunteers and prospective members, how does your PTA stack up? Does your board/association reflect your diverse student/family population? Join us as we share success stories of diversifying your PTA to build a strong foundation for your board/association.

205. Successful PTA Programs & Fundraising

Keep your PTA fresh by adding a new program or updating a current one. This workshop will share successful tactics that turn a good event into a great one. Get ideas from other PTAs that engage parents, raise funds, provide family entertainment, and meet the goals of your community.

206. Council Leadership Essentials

For Council presidents, treasurers, and membership chairs. You're on the council board now...and things are a little different! Learn the role of the Council PTA board members, their responsibilities and how each role interacts with units and the district. Learn tips and tricks from district leaders to make your transition to council smooth!

207. Family Engagement: A Shared Effort

Join us as we outline how your PTA can become more inclusive, individualized, integrated and impactful in its approach to family engagement. Learn best practices of Transformative Family Engagement: a shared effort of families, schools and community leaders to advance programs, practices and policies that empower every parent to make their child’s potential a reality.

SESSION THREE 1:30 pm – 2:45 pm

301. Unit President Part 2 (two-part workshop - register for both 101 & 301)

Part two of the information presented in Unit President 101. Includes how to create an agenda, financial responsibilities, communication, and conflict management for leaders.

302. Unit Treasurer Part 2 (two-part workshop – register for both 102 & 302)

Review all responsibilities of the unit treasurer over the course of an entire financial year. Topics include banking, budget, fundraising, contracts, money handling and financial reports.

303. Parliamentarian Basics Part 2 - with eBylaws (two-part workshop - register for both 103 & 303)

Part two of the information presented in Parliamentarian Basics Part 1. Also includes step by step instructions to updating bylaws using e-bylaws, participate in a live demonstration and get your e-bylaws questions answered.

304. Membership Themes & Idea Exchange

Membership the easy way! Developing a membership theme for your PTA will make your campaign run easier and add some excitement. Use the theme to create incentives and build events. Come and share your successful events and network with others for new and fun ideas for your next PTA event. Staff Appreciation, student/parent fun activities, and parent engagement/ education programs can be nearly free.

305. PTA Communications

PTAs are encouraged to communicate with PTA members, the school community, and the community at large to inform them about the value of PTA. This workshop will focus on tips, tricks, and strategies to help spotlight your PTA’s goals and accomplishments to your school community and beyond! We will touch on digital communication tools (email, websites, etc.), social media best practices, and more.

306. Managing Conflict

Does managing conflict seem impossible? Do not fear. Conflict can be healthy. It’s how you deal with it that makes all the difference. Ignoring conflict does not make it go away. Join us and get tips on meeting the challenges of working effectively together as a team when there are different personalities, leadership styles, experience levels, ages and understanding of the association and its mission.

307. PTA Financial Reviews (the new Audit)

Everything you need to know to conduct a PTA financial review at any level! Walk step by step through the Financial Review Checklist and learn how to fill out the Financial Review Report. Come and hear tips and tricks from seasoned financial reviewers.

Workshops that do not meet a minimum registration may be canceled. Attendees who registered for those canceled workshops will have the opportunity to select a different workshop.
