Event Details

First Amendment Activist Mary Beth Tinker
Comes to Suffolk Law on the Tinker Tour!

Mary Beth Tinker was an ordinary girl who wanted to make a difference.  At 13 years old, she had no idea that the simple act of wearing a black armband to school in protest of the Vietnam War would spark a national debate about students’ rights.  But it did, and the Supreme Court defended those rights with its landmark ruling that neither teachers nor students “shed their Constitutional rights . . . at the schoolhouse gate.” Tinker v. Des Moines, 1969.  Since then, her story has been shared in history books and over 6,000 court cases involving students’ rights to free expression in public schools.  Now, Mary Beth  is touring the country  to share her story, along with  the powerful voices of youth everywhere!

This event is sponsored by the Rappaport Center and Suffolk University Law School's Marshall-Brennan Constitutional Literacy Project.  The vision of the Marshall-Brennan Project is to empower high school students to be responsible citizens and lifelong participants in the democratic process.  Please join us in welcoming Mary Beth on Friday, November 15, from 4-6pm at Suffolk University Law School, 120 Tremont Street, First Floor Function Room, Boston, MA 02108.

First Amendment Activist Mary Beth Tinker and Sumaiyyah Abdullah, City on a Hill high school student, participant in the Suffolk Law Marshall-Brennan Constitutional Literacy Project, and runner up in the 2013 National Marshall-Brennan Moot Court Competition.
