November Fireside Film Nights: DOUBLE FEATURE!

1) FRI. NOV. 26 @ 7:00pm PST: The Rankin File: Legacy of a Radical (2018, 1hr 30min) by Teresa Alfeld

REGISTER FOR THE RANKIN FILE

I’m very excited to announce the free virtual screening of this documentary about my mentor — and hero — activist lawyer and politician Harry Rankin!

  • 6:30pm – chat lobby opens
  • 7:00pm – Welcome; land acknowledgment followed by film screening and Q & A with special guests including UBCIC Grand Chief Stewart Phillip and COPE Vancouver City Councillor Jean Swanson.
“The Rankin File: Legacy of a Radical chronicles Harry’s nearly fifty-year career beginning with his World War II military service as a soldier, twice wounded in combat. His worldview altered by his wartime experience, Harry sets out to build a working-class political movement in Vancouver that puts power in the hands of the people. Finally elected to city council in 1966 after eleven tries, Harry’s career as both a civic politician and a talented criminal lawyer takes off. Not even years of surveillance by the RCMP for alleged ties to the Communist Party – which he denies – can slow him down. What can we learn from the successes – and failures – of Harry Rankin?”

I would not be a lawyer today but for Harry. He wrote the letter of recommendation that got me admitted to UBC law school in 1980, and hired me as an articling student in 1983. He is responsible for my political orientation — he further radicalized and helped me crystallize my political thinking. I would not be where I am — or who I am today — but for Harry!

2) MON. NOV. 29 @ 7:00pm PST: Gaza Fights for Freedom (2019, 1hr 24min) by Abby Martin

  • 6:30pm – chat lobby opens
