Description

PLEASE READ ENTIRE DESCRIPTION BEFORE REGISTERING

This course provides an opportunity for those officers who do not have a department firearms instructor or other instructor available to have their annual Rule 13 qualifications completed for the calendar 2015 year, or who need a LEOSA qualification. There is no instruction provided during this course, and the officer is expected to come to the course fully prepared to complete the qualification. Officers participating in the course will be offered up to three attempts to pass. Please do not wear red colored clothing to the course, as due to new safety regulations imposed upon us, this color is used to indicate who the instructors are.

Handgun qualification:

For active duty Vermont Certified Law Enforcement Officers

A copy of the qualification course that an officer attending may use to practice the handgun course with can be found by clicking here. The officer must bring, at a minimum: duty belt with holster that is regularly worn while on duty, handgun that is normally carried on duty, at least 2 magazines with belt mounted magazine pouches, protective vest normally worn on duty (if the officer does not wear a vest on duty they will still be required to wear one while shooting on the VPA range), at least 60 rounds of handgun ammunition which is the ballistic equivalent of the ammunition they carry on duty, and a hat with a brim.

For retired officers qualifying under LEOSA

A copy of the course that the retired officer will be qualifying on can be found by clicking here. Shooters MUST bring their official retirement identification card issued by the department from which they retired, OR a letter on the letter head of the department from which they retired indicating that they have retired from that agency and meet the qualifications to carry a handgun under LEOSA. This letter must be signed by the department head from which the officer retired. Eligibility under LEOSA will be verified prior to qualification documentation being issued. Officers from any jurisdiction within the United States who meet the LEOSA requirements may conduct their qualifications here. Retired officers attending this qualification must bring, at a minimum, the weapon with which they wish to qualify, 75 rounds of ammunition, and a hat with a brim.

Upon the successful completion of the course(s) that the officer participates in, they will be issued an affidavit attesting to the fact that they have qualified under Rule 13 for that weapon type for their department head to report their annual training requirements to the Council, or documenting that qualification has been completed to qualify a retired officer under LEOSA. Those who do not successfully complete the course may schedule to be here on the makeup date. Eye and ear protection is available at the academy as well as loaner vests, and targets are included in the course fee. Please let the registrar know which qualification courses you wish to participate in when registering. These will be the only dates that will be available for qualifications to be completed by academy staff, except in the case of extreme emergencies (which are limited to medical leave or military deployment). Meals are not included during this program; please plan accordingly. Please direct any questions regarding this course and its requirements to Jacob.Hansell@vermont.gov or (802) 483-2735.
