Event description
Mental health clinicians and providers will learn firsthand what Minnesota's firefighters do and face on a daily basis.

About this Event

Minnesota’s 22,000 firefighters are dealing with increased rates of PTSD, substance use, suicidal ideation, depression and anxiety. Clinicians from multiple disciplines are encouraged to attend Fire Service 101, a vibrant, immersive and first-of-its-kind training course to better understand the critical challenges our state’s first responders are up against.

Designed for mental health clinicians and providers (including LICSW, LPCC, LP, LMFT, LADC, MD, APRN, RN and others), this day-long CEU-approved workshop will help providers deliver more culturally competent treatment to this unique population.

In an action-packed day — not another day full of boring PowerPoints — you’ll hear from firefighters and the experienced clinicians who work with them. You’ll also have the opportunity to even participate in realistic firefighting scenarios to understand, firsthand, what Minnesota’s 22,000 firefighters do and face on a daily basis.

  • Understand the unique culture of the fire service including the lingo and lifestyle
  • Learn the dos and don’ts don’t of working with firefighters to increase rapport and maintain credibility
  • Get up-to-date on the most recent research on mental health disorders in the fire service, including a deeper understanding of rising suicide rates
  • Understand the barriers that impede help seeking in the fire service
  • Engage in discussions with firefighters about firefighters
  • Learn how best to support firefighter families, relationships and significant others
  • Be immersed in a fire station for the day, experiencing what daily life is really like & participating in realistic on-the-job scenarios

Approved by the Minnesota Board of Psychology for 7 CEUs. LPCC, LADC, LICSW, LMFT pending board approval.
