Event description

Description

Come enjoy the amazing display of flowers that follows oak grassland wildfires in California. 2018’s summer fire on Lime Ridge, though frightening for those who lived nearby, will briefly but dramatically alter the environment for annual and perennial plants. Fire-following plants will take advantage of the sudden freedom from competition and the release of nutrients following the fire and dominate the landscape—they can only be seen for a year or two before they return to the seed bank and wait for the next wildfire. We’ll take a pleasant amble through several portions of Lime Ridge that burned last year to see how things have changed and talk about the value of proper fire management. Be sure to dress in layers and wear sturdy boots or shoes; bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and a snack. Sturdy shoes or hiking boots are recommended. Heavy rain cancels.
