Format: an IBP Fin Tech/ ISST breakfast briefing

Financial systems are exposed to complex and high-impact cyber, cyber-physical and physical threats. Such threats may arise from external actors aiming to generate financial gains or cause disruption, or may be a result of internal system faults or human errors.

In 2018 we will hold an Executive Insights breakfast briefing to bring together academics, practitioners and policy makers to discuss the challenges in Security of Financial Systems ('FinSec').

In collaboration with the Institute for Security Science and Technology (ISST) - hosted by Winton Group Ltd

The ISST is Imperial College London’s hub for security research and engagement. We coordinate interdisciplinary research in security across Imperial College London, and act as a security science, technology and innovation interface for academia, government and industry.

The Security of Financial Systems (FinSec) is one of our application areas, where we apply world-leading scientific capabilities to help solve global security challenges.

Speakers' abstracts

Dr PJ Beaghton is a Professor of Practice in Computing and Associate Director of the Institute for Security Science and Technology. His FinSec research at the ISST focuses (a) on security threats to the financial markets such as the contagion across exchanges, products and regions of intended or accidental disruptive shocks in the electronic securities and derivative markets, and (b) on algorithmic forensic analysis of complex transactions in securities and derivatives in order to identify suspicious patterns linked to money laundering and other criminal activities.
He is also involved in research with Professor Austin Burt (Life Sciences) and the Target Malaria consortium on reaction-diffusion and stochastic models of vector population dynamics. The primary focus is on modelling the usage of selfish genetic elements to genetically manipulate natural populations of mosquitoes that transmit malaria.

Professor David Hand is Senior Research Investigator and Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at Imperial College London, where he formerly held the Chair in Statistics. He is also Chief Scientific Advisor to Winton Group Ltd.

He is non-executive director of the UK Statistics Authority and is Chair of the Board of the UK Administrative Data Research Network. Upon completing his PhD in Secure Communications, Yiannis worked for more than 5 years as a penetration tester in London. He then headed up a number of local and off-shore risk assessment teams with a technology focus. His last position was that of strategic change manager for Operational Resilience, helping establish the CISO function and respective teams within it.

Dr Tom Griffin is Ripjar’s CEO; and has been working with his co-founders to re-design the way that financial threat detection can be implemented in the modern information age. Tom has a PhD in Applied Mathematics, and prior to Ripjar, held various research and leadership positions at GCHQ where his team were engineering solutions to protect the UK from threats including terrorism, cyber attacks and serious organised crime.
