Finnish Games Then and Now

During the past decades the Finnish game industry has produced a wide variety of multifaceted everyday entertainment. Large media companies and one-man enterprises alike have churned out games ranging from Commodore 64 titles and board games to live action role-playing events and downloadable mobile games. This whole gamut is now available for the public to explore and experience in a unique exhibition where select items from almost a hundred years worth of Finnish games and game design are brought into the limelight. Many of the items on display are also playable!

The exhibition features both fondly remembered classics and latest innovations. Exhibits include such nostalgic titles as the board game Afrikan tähti (1951), the Commodore 64 license game Uuno Turhapuro muuttaa maalle (1986) featuring a beloved Finnish film character, and the radio show/fantasy role-playing game Lohikäärmepuu broadcast in the early 1990s by legendary Radiomafia. Examples of the modern digital generation and top design include Outland (2011), Trials HD (2009), Trine (2009), and the world-famous Angry Birds (2009).

Information and materials on games made in Finland are scattered between different sources and institutions, gathering dust in archives or lying forgotten in some corner of the Internet, and some industry milestones have even faded into obscurity. The Finnish Games Then and Now exhibition brings together many of these games and puts them on display for all to see and play, so that they may once again enrich our lives.

The exhibition is organized by the University of Tampere Game Research Lab in association with Rupriikki Media Museum, Nordic DiGRA 2012 Conference, Pelikonepeijoonit, ManseGames, and Tampere University of Applied Sciences. The exhibition is produced by researchers Annakaisa Kultima and Kati Alha, and students in the university's Game Exhibition course.
