Event Details

Immerse yourself in the wonders of Joshua Tree National Park and connect with the enchantment to be found there.  This course features the relationship between photography and art.  In it we will explore the artistic process and how to grow as an artist.  It is not intended to be a basic photography class but rather an opportunity to expand your personal interpretation and creative expression which is the heart of the art.  Our experience of this marvelous land will be enhanced by camping (optional) in the Lost Horse Campground, from Friday through Sunday.  The weekend schedule includes two (2) sunrise shoots, two (2) morning shoots, one (1) sunset shoot, one (1) optional night sky shoot (conditions permitting). There will be classroom programs to provide an orientation, to discuss “The Essence of Fine Art” and photo sharing and constructive critiques.  This is an “action packed” workshop, so, bring your camera equipment, camping equipment and enthusiasm and watch your creativity soar!  Note: arrangements will be made for those preferring to sleep with something more substantial over their heads than rip-stop nylon. Plan to make accommodations in Twentynine Palms and meet at the Oasis Visitor center to head out to the shooting locations.

Call 760-367-5535 for more information on the camping option and camping equipment can be rented from local outfitters.

Please download the course outline Fine Art Photography in JTNP Fall 2016 for the class itinerary, meeting times and locations.

Desert Institute at Joshua Tree National Park

Exploring Nature through Education

The Desert Institute at Joshua Tree National Park is an adult and family education program offering an in-depth exploration of the park’s natural wonders. Learn from highly qualified instructors who are passionate about sharing their expertise, and committed to providing a personal and fun learning experience. The Desert Institute is sponsored by the Joshua Tree National Park Association, and operates with the full endorsement of the National Park Service. Join us this season for an educational adventure.

Field Classes

The Desert Institute offers outdoor field classes for adult learners in cultural history, natural science, survival skills, desert naturalist studies, citizen science, and creative arts. The Desert Institute also offers half day courses for children from 8-13 years and their parents.  Enrollment is open to all, and some courses may be taken for optional university credit. All field programs follow “Leave No Trace” principles to minimize impact on the desert environment, and where necessary, obtain special permits to access certain aspects of Joshua Tree National Park that would otherwise be restricted. Weekend courses ranging from one to three days are scheduled over two class semesters, Fall and Spring. Discounts are available for members of the Joshua Tree National Park Association and Partners in Nature Education.

Custom Programs
