Learn how to document your unique family history!

Join us for this encore presentation in our ongoing ethnic research series: Researching Japanese Ancestry. 

The first half of the seminar will focus on background and research in the United States:

  • The political climate and pertinent U.S. laws

  • Interment camps

  • Repatriation and redress

The second half of the seminar will focus on research in Japan:

  • Finding your koseki

  • Understanding ohaka and kakocho

  • Visiting relatives, cemeteries and temples

The seminar is suitable for both beginners and experienced researchers. Attendees are welcome to bring a bag lunch for an informal noon meeting to discuss their Japanese-American history with seminar participants.

Linda Harms Okazaki Headshot

Linda Harms Okazaki is a fourth generation San Franciscan who has lived most of her life in the Bay Area. Her interest in genealogy began as a hobby in 1998 but has since grown to a personal quest. Linda has been researching her husband’s ancestry for the past three years, documenting his family in the internment camps and in Japan. She is passionate about researching, documenting, teaching, and sharing the stores of Japanese Americans.


REGISTRATION INFORMATION:
Class size is limited to 30 attendees. Pre-registration is required.

CGS members are admitted for free. Non-members fee is $20.00* and can be applied towards a CGS membership the day of the seminar.

Register early to confirm your seat. Walk-ins will not be admitted.

Whether you have Gold Rush ancestors or have no family connection to California, you will find extensive support for your genealogy research at the California Genealogical Society (CGS) in Oakland. The society offers research services, online indexes and databases, and a research library housing over 38,000 reference materials from California, the United States, and around the world. CGS is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation. The library is conveniently located in Uptown Oakland, one block north of the Paramount Theatre, at 2201 Broadway, Suite LL2. We are three blocks from the 19th Street BART Station.
