About this event

Taking care of your business starts with taking care of yourself.

Techstars has helped hundreds of startups succeed, both as businesses and as people. We know that mental wellness is important for everyone, and that the challenges of entrepreneurship tend to appeal to high-achieving, driven people. Being high-achieving is great but there’s also a lot of psychological stress & anxiety of constantly feeling behind, the idea of “keep plowing forward”, the pressure to not let people down, and often prioritizing the company ahead of yourself that comes along with it.

Join us to hear from some remarkable people on lessons they've learned and how they found their inner strength to overcome life's hurdles.

Panelists:

Damayanti Dipayana is the CEO and Co-Founder of Manatee (Techstars LA 2019). Manatee is a family-first mental health care company designed to help kids thrive in the modern world. They've just launched 'Building Brave Kids', a groundbreaking 12-week virtual therapy program empowering kids to conquer anxiety. After losing her brother due to mental disorders and as a mom of 3 kids she's irrationally passionate about making mental healthcare for families massively better.

Hillary Allen is a world-class professional ultrarunner sponsored by The North Face and author of Out and Back: A Runner's Story of Survival. In 2017, Allen was ranked #1 in the world when she fell 150 feet off a mountain ridge, breaking multiple bones and suffering a life-altering blow to her body and athletic career. In her book, Allen shares the story of her recovery both physically and mentally, and hard-earned knowledge that the path forward is not always linear, that healing takes time, and that the process of rediscovery is ongoing as she learns what it takes to survive–and thrive.

Rick Manelius, PhD is the CTO of Contact Mapping and a Techstars All-Star Mentor. Rick wrote a blog to share his story, not only because it was part of his own healing journey, but because he knew so many others are fighting similar battles behind the scenes. "Having had to fight these and other battles while trying to run a startup, I know how critical it was/is to proactively search and find support networks to help in these times of need. Unfortunately, in tech we can forget the importance of our own humanity, and so I try to keep bringing that topic up."

Matt Serel is a Techstars mentor and the president and co-founder of You Are Accountable. Accountable provides a safety net of support for individuals in recovery from addiction as they transition from therapeutic care into a fulfilling, and self determined life. Matt started a behavioral health EHR company called AccuPoint, and during that time became addicted to opiates, which ended in a near-fatal overdose in 2013. He was able to get clean, bootstrap AccuPoint into a profitable company and eventually sold it at 29 to Therapy Brands. Matt shares more of his personal story on his Accountable blog.
