Finding Balance: A mindful approach to mental health, secondary trauma and self care

The act of caring for and guiding children can be depleting to our physical and mental health. When we feel stressed, it is easy to stop doing the things that replenish our energy and keep us going through the difficult phases of life. Physical and mental health can balance your mind and body, which is essential to achieving wellness for optimal functioning. In this workshop, we will explore the importance of adult mental health, secondary trauma and self-care.

Self-care is the active participation of enhancing your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health and quality of life. It can alleviate some of your stress and bring balance to your life. It is important to maintain both the physical and mental components of self-care in order to achieve an overall state of wellness. There are behavioral, relational, and internal self-care strategies.

Learning Outcomes

  • Define and explore the concepts of mental health, secondary trauma and self-care
  • Understand the importance of importance of self-awareness and self-care in your own life
  • Reflect on the relationship between your mental and physical health, self-care and teaching at your best
  • Identify your own self-care strengths and areas to improve
  • Utilize concrete tools to create a personalized self-care plan
  • Learn various self-care techniques: balance, mindful breathing, self-checks and assessments
  • Gain self-monitoring techniques to try at home

Kevin Jewell, MS, LSP, LP

Kevin's undergraduate work was in psychology with my graduate work in school psychology. He started working in children’s mental health in 1982 and school psychology in 1992. He left regular school districts in 2000 to start a private practice and in 2001 began including charter schools which eventually became the full focus of his private practice. Kevin finds great fulfilment in serving schools and children.

Terri Strom, MSW, LISW

Terri Strom works as a community social worker with MCM’s Montessori Partners Serving All Children (MPSAC) initiative. Terri currently supports MPSAC school partners providing, early intervention and referral support for children, support/consultation for staff and parenting support and community resource connection for families. Terri holds professional licensure in Michigan and Minnesota and a MN Pre-K 12 school social work license. Terri has over 19 years of experience working with children, their families and schools in economically, culturally and racially diverse communities.

Time: 8:30 a.m. registration and social; 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. workshop
