EPIP is beginning a series of monthly webinars for our community, all of which are free for EPIP members. The webinar series speak to the values that EPIP upholds: they are a space for our members to share their own knowledge, and a place for EPIP to curate material that aligns with our beliefs in leadership development and social impact.

This first member-driven webinar, Financial Due Diligence: Using the 990 to Support Good Grantmaking, will review key financial statements to understand nonprofit fiscal health, including the IRS Form 990, annual reports, balance sheets, and online tools for evaluation.

Questions the discussion will explore:

·         What are the primary differences between nonprofit and for-profit finance?

·         What are the benefits and drawbacks of using 990 data?

·         How can one begin to understand an organization’s adaptive capacity using the balance sheet on a Form 990?

·         When is FinancialSCAN an appropriate tool for analyzing 990 data and comparing organizations?

Who should attend?

·         Donors for whom financial due diligence or analysis is a component, or desired component, of the grantmaking process

·         Donors interested in learning about a tool that can help simplify due diligence and hold more productive conversations with grantees or your board

·         Nonprofit executives or fundraisers who want to understand key indicators of nonprofit financial health

Presenter Bio:

Jessica Prue, EPIP Bay Area Steering Committee member, works with both funders and nonprofits as part of the Advisory Services team at the Nonprofit Finance Fund. Grounding her work in rigorous financial analysis, she works with nonprofits across sectors to help management teams understand the implications of strategic decisions such as expansion, facilities projects, hiring new staff, and scaling back programs. This expertise gives her valuable insight into understanding an organization's financial stability and capacity for program growth. She is also involved in NFF’s national work with Financial SCAN, an online platform for nonprofit financial health analysis. Prior to joining NFF, Ms. Prue worked at Lex Mundi Pro Bono Foundation in Washington DC. She has experience working with an artisans’ cooperative in Paraguay, a microfinance organization in Bangladesh, and a refugee resettlement agency in Syracuse, New York.

Outside of her work at NFF, she serves on the boards of The One Percent Foundation, a foundation dedicated to building a broad-based movement for next generation philanthropy, and At the Crossroads, a homeless youth organization in San Francisco. Ms. Prue has a BS in Applied Economics and Management from Cornell University and a MPA from the Maxwell School at Syracuse University.
