Description

Created & Conducted by David Shelters

Early Thai startup community-builder and John Wiley author who is best known locally as the Co-Founder & Editor of Thailand Startup Review has created three progressive workshops to assist tech founders in charting a more successful financial path for their entrepreneurial ventures.

FFG Workshop I – Bootstrapping Your Startup (2 hrs.)

Bootstrapping is often used as an adjective to describe a cost-saving action. In this workshop the concept of bootstrapping is re-defined to include much more and can be transformed into an effective strategy to avoid the need to raise investment funds as far into a venture’s life cycle as possible to minimize dilution of Founders’ equity and loss of decision-making control. Various types of bootstrapping decisions and bootstrapping opportunities will be introduced. They will serve as a basis to formulate a bootstrapping strategy. Very few startups will be able to go from incubation to exit via bootstrapping. Deciding when to abandon one’s bootstrapping strategy and proceeding with fund-raising is one of the most important decisions a founding team will need to make. The workshop will conclude with the “when” and “how” this decision is to be made.

FFG Workshop II – Startup Fund Raising (2 Hrs.)

For founders of a startup fund raising can consume much time and expense as well as be a great source of frustration. Questions such as when to fund-raise, how much funding should be solicited, which investors to approach and how to approach them frequently torment tech founders. This workshop is intended to help founders answer these questions, improve the probability of securing investment funds and illuminate a path towards more efficient fund raising. The workshop will commence with a Finance for Geeks 101 overview of basic concepts and principles of venture capital fund raising. Topics will than progress from formulating a fund raising strategy, content and delivery of the various types of pitches and preparation of prospectus documents, including the investor deck. The workshop will conclude with a snapshot of the current Thai venture capital fund raising environment.

FFG Workshop III – Negotiating a Term Sheet (2 Hrs.)

In the realm of finance founders of tech startups are often at a disadvantage in negotiating funding terms with investors possessing much more financial experience. This workshop is meant to level the playing field and to ensure that tech founders are in the best position to not only increase their probability of securing investment funds but, perhaps more importantly, to negotiate the most favorable funding terms. The workshop is intended to improve the negotiating position and skills of founders. The workshop will commence with two pre-negotiation topics- Building negotiating leverage and formulating a negotiating strategy. Breaking down a term sheet by dividing terms into three categories and employing concepts and tactics found in Sun Tzu’s Art of War will follow. The workshop will conclude with How to Conclude Negotiations and two post-negotiation topics- Negotiation Post-Mortem and Due Diligence.

Make sure to join these workshop to fully start or improve your business to its full capacity!
