Event description
Filmshop presents a case study of WHILE I BREATHE, I HOPE, a feature documentary directed by Emily Harrold

About this Event

Join Filmshoppers Emily Harrold (Producer/Director) and Kyle Kelley (Cinematographer) as they discuss the making of their feature documentary film WHILE I BREATHE, I HOPE, about South Carolina Politician and CNN Political Commentator Bakari Sellers. Through his experiences the film explores what it means to be young, Black, and progressive in the American South. The film premiered at the 2018 New Orleans Film Festival, where it won the audience award for feature documentary, before continuing a festival run that has included more than 40 festivals. The film aired on public television as a part of the 11th season of Afropop on PBS and World Channel.

Through film clips and sharing the filmmakers' experiences during production, this case study will explore the ins and outs of producing a indie feature documentary. Topics will include the director/cinematographer relationship, building trust with your subject, pre-production and production logistics, post-production, and the process of funding an indie documentary.

Attendees will receive a temporary link to watch WHILE I BREATHE, I HOPE prior to the event.

Filmshop's Breakthrough Series Case Study is made possible in part with public funds from Creative Engagement, supported by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and administered by LMCC.

LMCC empowers artists by providing them with networks, resources, and support, to create vibrant, sustainable communities in Manhattan and beyond.
