Salsipuedes by Ricardo Aguilar & Manolito Rodríguez (95 min). Opening Night film - Panama's Official Entry Best “Foreign Language Film” category 2017 Academy Awards. Synopsis: "You can take the boy out of the barrio, but you can’t take the barrio out of the boy“. The story of a young boy, Andres Pimienta, that is sent to the United States to be kept away from the bad influences, but returns 10 years later and meets his father, Bobby, an encounter that will change his destiny.

SHORT FILMS FROM DIPLOMADO INTERNACIONAL DE CINE. AVES DE PAPEL. Directed by Beatriz Ledezma (22 min). Selected for the “Short Film Corner” at the Marché du Film, Cannes Festival 2017. Short Film from Diplomado Internacional (International Film Course). Synopsis: A friendship that transcends the barriers of the impossible communicating through paper birds beyond what life allows. EL AMATEUR. Directed by Patricia Angulo (25 min). A short film presented at the 2016 Cannes Festival. Short Film from International Film Course. Synopsis: Hilario is a young rebel who must face the biggest challenge of his life, becoming a disciplined boxer. MONSTRO. Directed by Allan Tsimogianis (5 min). Winner of Best Direction at the Hayah Film Festival. Short Film from Diplomado Internacional (International Film Course). Synopsis: Two men faced by a dark past. SHORT FILMS FROM INSTITUTO PANAMERICANO. FFPAF promotes and encourages the participation of youth studying film in Panama and abroad. FFPAF promotes and encourages the participation of the youth studying film in Panama and abroad. Last Four short films from this High School Program will be given the chance of exposing and getting experience in Hollywood Film Industry. THE LAST SOLDIER directed by Luis Romero. Winner Documentary telling the story of the American presence in Panama and social relations that are generated for almost a century.

Oasis - Closing Feature Film - 7:30 pm
Oasis directed by Jorge Ameer (71 min). Official Entry from Panama for 2018 Academy Awards & Golden Globes Awards (this is an Official HFPA Hollywood Foreign Press voting members screening for Golden Globe consideration) and World Premiere at the Cannes Film Festival Marche Du Film. Synopsis: Two friends, embark on a tropical expedition to bury their past. An encounter with a mysterious indigent will change the course of their trip, as what lies beneath their friendship maybe more sinister than meets the eye.

Event Details

Films from Panama & the Americas Festival (FFPAF), a project of Viva Panama Organization (nonprofit entity) originally called “Panamanian International Film Festival-LA (PIFF-LA)”, presented by Union Bank, co-sponsor by Hollywood Independents, in collaboration with the General Consulate of Panama, proudly announces its official program selections for its 2017 edition.

 FFPAF serves as a platform to promote and expose the harvest of Panamanian & Latin-American filmmakers, facilitating screening exhibitions and promoting the networking between participating countries and the industry in Hollywood, hoping to stimulate the development of film projects between Panama, Latin-America & USA.

FFPAF is held during the celebration of the International Week of Panama in Los Angeles County, established by Viva Panama Organization in 2003, in conjunction with the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.

The Opening Gala will be held on Friday, August 18, 2017 at the Louvre Banquet Hall, located at the1767 N. Vermont Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90027, in conjunction with the Ambassador Awards Gala, hosted by Viva Panama Organization, having as especial guest, Rosario Mayela, Queen of Las Tablas Calle Arriba 2016, and the recognition of distinguished Panamanians who  have contributed to the as Ambassador Award Honorees: Julio Hanson, Entertainer; Elmis Castillo, Actor/Director; Nikki Campbell, Drum Virtuosa; Guillermo Ameer, Biomedical Pioneer; and Horacio Prado, Master Designer.

FFPAF 2017 will screen feature films and short films, representing the harvest of the film industry in Panama, along with Q&A panels, and a special Panamanian Carnival Tribute. Your Gala ticket gives you a VIP entrance to the Film Festival, general admission is also free, but registration is needed at https: //www.eventbrite.com/e/films-from-panama-the-americas-festival-2017-tickets-35166045589

Films from Panama & the Americas Festival (FFPAF) will take place on Saturday, August 19, 2017, at the iconic Egyptian Theater, located at 6712 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90028.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Invitation is on a first come first serve basis; seating order (please be clear that priority seating expires 20 minutes before each screening: (1) VIP - Those who bought tickets to attend the Gala on Friday Aug. 18, 2017, but they have to be on time for the screening (2) Members of the Hollywood Foreign Press; (3) Those who register via Eventbrite (first come first serve); 94) Those with no reservation.
