Event description

Description

Come meet the director of "TYRUS", Pamela Tom, at an intimate and exclusive Films at the Gate opening night reception where Tom will share with the audience her experience of documenting Tyrus Wong's captivating life story and body of work, a film that was 17 years in the making.

Tyrus was a prolific artist and painter, whose Chinese style of brush painting was the inspiration behind "Bambi"'s artwork and who was a storyboard artist for classic movies such as "Rebel Without a Cause" and "Music Man".

"Tyrus Wong weathered irrevocable separation from his mother -- and, in the hope of making a life in America, incarceration, isolation and rigorous interrogation -- all when he was still a child. In the years that followed, he endured poverty, discrimination and chronic lack of recognition, not only for his work at Disney but also for his fine art...because of the marginalization to which Asian-Americans were long subject, he passed much of his career unknown to the general public." -- The New York Times

After the reception, guests are invited join Pamela for a free, outdoor screening of "TYRUS" at the Chinatown Gate. Learn about the adversities Tyrus overcame as a Chinese immigrant and the legacy he has left behind, immortalized by Tom's inspiring documentary.

All proceeds from ticket sales will fund ACDC's youth leadership program, A-VOYCE, which empowers teens to learn about their community's history and current issues and mobilizes teens to advocate for the community's needs through direct appeals to local government and public art installations.

Refreshments include a light dinner and a cash bar.
