Event description

Description

FILMONOMICS QUARTERLY is a new event from the agency for change Birds Eye View - aimed at filmmakers, film executives and agitators for change (in film or other sectors) who want to connect to others who care about greater gender equality in film. We will celebrate new work, bring smart speakers across a range of subjects and create space for debate as well as solution. This is the first of many quarterly symposiums.

We encourage everyone who has attended our Filmonomics programme or other equivalents to attend, but we welcome those who haven't. You will need to be part of or work with the film industry to get the most from this afternoon of thought-provoking debate on film, the current challenges and how we build a more equal film future.

Schedule:

1.30pm Introduction from Mia Bays of Birds Eye View + clip reel of exciting new films by women due for release over the next 6 months

2-3pm Anna Smith, current President of the UK Critics Circle (Film) and acting film editor Time Out, on the significance of the female perspective in film criticism (covering thorny issues, like how to critique without becoming a part of the problem)

330-445pm Film Producer and hot-shot data analyst and BEV board member Stephen Follows on POSITIVE USES OF FEMALE-FOCUSED FILM DATA (the numbers we all share are always depressing and we wanted to buck that trend)

445-545pm Intersectionality in Film - panel with members of other leading diverse film collectives

545-645pm JUST ANNOUNCED: Key Note Q&A with Lennie Goodings, Chair of Virago Books, a major inspiration for Birds Eye View and anyone pushing for gender equality in the arts.

Virago was founded in 1973 as ‘the first mass-market publisher for 52 per cent of the population – women. An exciting new imprint for both sexes in a changing world.’ It was an idea of Dame Carmen Callil’s, born out of a particular time, place and politics. The name instantly signalled Virago’s attitude. Virago means ‘heroic war-like woman’, or, as the thesaurus has it a particular kind of woman: biddy, bitch, dragon, fire-eater, fury, harpy, harridan, hussy, muckraker, scold, she-devil, siren, spitfire, termagant, tigress, vituperator, vixen, wench.

Here was a cheeky upstart, happy to shock and tease.....More than forty years on Virago is the outstanding international publisher of books by women. Sometimes we publish to entertain, sometimes we publish to give readers the sheer pleasure of beautiful writing, sometimes we publish to change the world.

645-745pm Break/Wrap
