Event description

Description

Chicago’s Ethiopian Community Association and the Logan Center host filmmaker Haile Gerima who will introduce his best-known film Sankofa (1993) about slavery from Africa to the US, the Caribbean and the Western Hemisphere. 50 years ago Haile Gerima left Ethiopia to study acting at Chicago’s Goodman School. Leaving Chicago, Gerima turned to directing at UCLA where he became a member of the LA Rebellion movement of black filmmakers in the 1970s-80s. Haile Gerima looks back at Sankofa and his experience of “Inheriting Chicago” and encountering the history of slavery and its legacy in the US. Articulating the African perspective melded with 50 years of life in the US, Professor Haile Gerima and his films address the immense issues of racism, colonialism, identity and culture. Hear Professor Jacqueline Stewart and Assistant Professor Adom Getachew interview Gerima from their own academic and personal backgrounds along with Kerry James Marshall, the Production Designer for Sankofa joining them in discussion. Kerry James Marshall is known for large-scale paintings, sculptures, and other objects that take African American life and history as their subject matter. His work often deals with the effects of the Civil Rights movement on domestic life, in addition to working with elements of popular culture. This event is FREE. Limited seating; registration required.
