About this event

Experience a special screening of The Wizard of Oz at the home of the ruby slippers.

The Wizard of Oz is a film about Dorothy’s (a Kansas farm girl) journey to a magical land and was based on the 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum. In addition to its many other merits, the MGM movie ranks as a milestone in the history of Technicolor because of its extensive color sequences set in the Land of Oz. The magical shoes, changed from the book’s silver slippers to those with an iridescent red hue, played a central role in the film.

Before the screening, visit the ruby slippers on display in the new permanent exhibition Entertainment Nation in the museum’s Culture Wing.

Seating is limited and reservations are recommended. Seating will be opened first to Eventbrite-registered attendees and then to walk-in visitors. When we reach maximum capacity, the event will be closed to the public.

The National Museum of American History welcomes visitors of all ages and abilities. This event is wheelchair accessible. Closed captioning in English and assistive listening devices will be provided. Additional accommodations are available upon request; please email nmahprograms@si.edu. Two weeks’ notice is preferred.

Entertainment Nation is made possible in part by the generous leadership support of the Ray and Dagmar Dolby Family, Tom and Karen Rutledge, The History Channel, Dr. Stephanie Bennett-Smith, American Cruise Lines, an Anonymous Friend, Linda and Mike Curb, Hollywood Foreign Press Association, and Barry and Wendy Meyer.
