Event description

Description

A long awaited screening of "Hebrew Kisses" () directed by Manya Lozovskaya.
The film examines a double standard in Israeli society that prevents many citizens from having a very basic right of marriage and creating a family that is considered Jewish while at the same time affecting their identity and sense of belonging.

This situation is mundane to hundreds of thousands of Israeli citizens born oversees, especially in former Soviet Union, yet virtually unnoticed by Israeli-born and other Jewish diaspora that had an opportunity to freely profess Judaism and maintain their Jewish identity.

But more than anything it's a poetic story about searching for oneself, for a place and people to belong with, to love and be loved.

The film screening will be followed by a panel discussion featuring _________

FILM PLOT

Manya, newly repatriated from Russia in accordance with the Israeli Law of Return, meets Erez, a native-born Israeli Jew. She soon learns that to be with Erez she must undergo an Orthodox conversion (known as Giyur), even though she and her family already identify as Jewish. The film follows her as she reevaluates her love and redefines her Jewish identity.
