Description

Join the Elliott School Institute for African Studies and the Gender Equality Initiative for a film screening of In the Name of Your Daughter. The film will be followed by an open discussion/Q+A featuring Giselle Portenier, the film's Director.

Just two weeks after In The Name Of Your Daughter took audiences by storm at sold-out screenings at the Raindance Film Festival in London, England, this heartwarming and hopeful documentary comes to Washington, DC! Click Here to watch the trailer.

Come see this unmissable film about some of the most courageous girls in the world, Tanzanian girls as young as eight who are standing up for their human rights. The film gives a voice, for the first time, to girls whose voices haven’t been heard in thousands of years.

In The Name Of Your Daughter tells the story of girls like Rosie Makore, 11, who had to make the toughest choice of her young life: submit to female genital mutilation and child marriage, or risk her life and run away from home. And it’s the story of human right advocate Rhobi Samwelly, who confronts her community and protects the girls in her Safe House in Northern Tanzania.

Audiences have called the film “moving,” “inspiring,” and even “life changing.” In London, reviewers said “A powerful and beautiful melange of heartbreak, bravery and HOPE. A magnificent film of extreme importance created from a place of love.” The film won Best Canadian Feature Documentary in Edmonton in May, and the Jury Prize for best documentary in Los Angeles just two weeks ago.
