Event description
Sanctuary Kitchen Film Screening and Talk-Back of "We Are Not Princesses"

About this Event

Join Sanctuary Kitchen for a film screening of WE ARE NOT PRINCESSES. This film offers a unique peek into the private lives of women who have survived unspeakable sorrow, yet blossom through the healing power of art. During a theater workshop in a Lebanese refugee camp, four Syrian women discover they have a lot in common with the ancient Greek heroine, Antigone, and experience freedoms forbidden in their homeland. Told with humor and heart, WE ARE NOT PRINCESSES elicits intimacy and honesty from its unlikely group of thespians about loss, love, grief and hope.

Following the film, there will be a talk-back moderated by Elise Morrison, PhD, Assistant Professor Yale Theater Studies, with film director Bridgette Auger; IRIS - Integrated Refugee and Immigrant Services, and Syrian Sanctuary Kitchen chef Abir.

Guests will also enjoy a reception of traditional Syrian dishes featuring recipes from the cookbook, “Our Syria, Recipes from Home,” prepared by Sanctuary Kitchen Chefs. Copies of the cookbook, developed by a co-director of the film and featuring recipes of the women in the film, will be available for sale, as well as craft items made by IRIS’s women's empowerment programs.

This event is supported by the Connecticut Humanities Fund, Yale Theater Studies, University of New Haven, and IRIS (Integrated Refugee and Immigrant Services)
