Description

Dear Supporter,

At PTS Rehab Works, our non-profit provides health education and pro bono physical therapy to families and individuals in Prince George’s County. This Summer, we would like to share our health education initiatives in a different format. Instead of our monthly workshops, we are now excited to report that we will now create video content that addresses key health issues in our community.

Our inaugural project is Women of Faith: Coping with Trauma. This mental health documentary takes an in-depth look into the lives of four women who are survivors of childhood sexual abuse, but who also triumphantly find joy, hope and peace through their faith in God and their community. We know it is a tough subject, but let’s have the tough conversation so women, children and families can find healing.

Why this topic? Thousands of children of all different ethnicities are sexually abused every year in the United States. The topic is relevant after numerous claims of abuse have recently been in the news - from the #metoo campaign to USA Women's Gymnastics, Boy Scouts of America and the Catholic Church.

RAINN, the nation's largest anti-sexual violence organization notes that "the effects of child sexual abuse can be long-lasting and affect the victim's mental health. According to RAINN, victims are more likely than non-victims to experience the following mental health challenges...

  • 4 times more likely to develop symptoms of drug abuse

  • 4 times more likely to experience PTSD as adults

  • 3 times more likely to experience a major depressive episode as adults

If we don't have the tough conversations about what abuse looks like and how it can impact the lives of thousands - how can we ever recognize and stop sexual abuse in its tracks? We need to protect our children. Let's have those tough conversations in our homes, churches, schools and workplaces.

We are truly excited about the projects to come and we are asking for your support! We are in need of "finishing funds” in the amount of $8,000. The funds will help us to complete the film, organize the premiere, submit the film to festivals, screen at community workshops, and share on social media.

Whether you choose to donate or become a sponsor, every penny counts. If you know of any other company, organization, or individual that might be interested in supporting this project, please send them our way! My email address is aheath@ptsrehabworks.com.

Please make checks payable to PTS Rehab Works at 1401 Mercantile Lane, Suite 107, Largo, MD 20774 or simply donate on our website. Thank you in advance for your support!

Sincerely,

Angela Heath
