About this event

Afrikana is pleased to partner with The JXN Project, Maymont, and VPM at Maymont for the world premiere of How the Monuments Came Down, a documentary by Field Studio in association with VPM. We invite you to join us for this evening under the stars featuring a live performance by RVA’s own, Butcher Brown, a pre-screening panel discussion, film screening, food selections provided by Richmond Black Restaurant Experience and beer and wine for purchase.

Pre-screening discussion panelists include: Christy Coleman (story advisor and cast member), Dr. Julian Hayter (cast member/ story advisor), Dr. Sesha Joi Moon (story advisor, Afrikana and The JXN Project), and Enjoli Moon (story advisor, Afrikana and The JXN Project), Joseph Rogers (story advisor/ cast member), Krista Weatherford (Maymont), Michael Paul Williams (cast member). Welcome by VPM's Jayme Swain.

About the Film:

How the Monuments Came Down is a timely and searing look at the history of white supremacy and Black resistance in Richmond. Through stories of descendants and activists, the feature-length film reveals how monuments to Confederate leaders stood for more than a century—and why they fell. 8:30pm: Pre-screening Panel Discussion; Welcome by Jayme Swain, VPM

9:15pm: Film Screening Begins (to last approximately 90 minutes)

Cost: $10 per pod (holds up to 4 people); ticket sale proceeds benefit Afrikana.

Ticket purchases are non-refundable, rain date is Wed June 23.

Enter the event through the Hampton Gates on the historical estate side of Maymont at 1700 Hampton Street, Richmond, VA 23220. Event parking is available at the Historic Estate Entrance. Security check and temperature checks will be completed upon entry.

This is a COVID conscious event. Staff, volunteers and partners will be adhering to CDC and VA Health Department protocols and will incorporate contactless practices when possible. Attendees are required to observe social distancing and wear a face mask and/or covering when in public spaces (outside of pods). Temperature checks will be completed before entry and sanitizing stations will be provided.

Safety guidelines will be in place, based on the Commonwealth’s applicable regulations at the time of the event. To help maintain social distance protocols, all seating will be in pods for groups of up to 4 people. All pods must arrive together in order to be seated.
