Description

Friday, March 15th, 7pm, with Commodore Sean McDermott
and the Film, 'An Inconvenient Sequal: Truth to Power'

With more than 50 years experience racing sailboats, avid sailor is what comes to mind when you think of Commodore Sean McDermott. What you may not realize is that his professional career takes him to frontier areas like Kazakhstan, Russia, the US and Canadian Arctic regions as well as Norway and NE Greenland, as an ice management expert. Since starting out as an ice observer in the 1980s, Sean has witnessed some of the changes that now dominate climate news. In this role he spends much of his time in either helicopters or on icebreakers or even icebergs, making him the perfect speaker for this month's film night.

Sean will talk about:
  • What his career entails and how he was uniquely positioned to note some of these changes in climate
  • Climate shifts noted in the US & Canadian Beaufort Sea Regions
  • Caspian Water Level Challenges
  • NE Greenland Ice Bergs, field ice and multi-year ice cover

The film, 'An Inconvenient Sequal: Truth to Power' follows the efforts made to tackle climate change and Al Gore's attempts to persuade governmental leaders to invest in renewable energy, culminating in the signing of the Paris Agreement in 2016, as well as attempting to de-bunk the de-bunkers of Gore, his film and Global Warming in general.
