Director: Aurel Klimt, 2017, 87 min, animated puppet sci-fi, Czech Republic
Czech dubbing with English subtitles

Extraterrestrial adventure of the world’s most popular cosmonaut! A dog living on the outskirts of a Russian city is forcibly sent into space but manages to crash-land on a faraway planet where she meets its indigenous inhabitants. The trouble begins when the humans decide to explore this planet by themselves, too.

It took Aurel Klimt and his team more than 10 years to launch this animated puppet sci-fi musical comedy, but the idea itself dates back to 2003, when he together with Miroslav Wanek and the actors from the Theatre in Dlouhá Street prepared a puppet play about the canine pioneer of cosmonautics – Laika. The film was awarded the prestigious Czech Lion Award for the Best Stage Design in 2017.

In this bizarre fantasy Laika survives her journey and soon after leaving the Earth orbit she lands on a faraway planet colonized by other animal cosmonauts. Here they live peacefully side-by-side with the indigenous life forms. However, the local harmony is suddenly in jeopardy as the humans decide to leave their footsteps in the ground of this yet undisturbed land.

Laika exploits the indeed complex themes of the relationship of humans to animals and nature and how their greed and unquenchable desire for fame and “better tomorrow” can befog morals and other virtues of a person. This seemingly child-oriented movie is aslo full of rather grown-up references thanks to which it is equally enjoyable for the little ones as well as for their parents.

Organized in collaboration with Bohemian Benevolent & Literary Association.
