(By artist filmmaker Steven Eastwood, (2017), 90 minutes)

Across the water on the island, four individuals experience the year in which their lives will end. Illness progresses, relationships gently shift, and we are witness to rarely seen and intensely private moments.
Island (and its sister work The Interval and the Instant) were the last of three artist commissions created by Fabrica that explore end of life themes. Produced with the full consent and involvement of the inpatients, outpatients and staff of Earl Mountbatten Hospice and St Mary’s Hospital which the artist depicts as a palliative island, it comprises of a symphony of movements, practices and rituals. Within this intricate orchestration of care we are witness to home visits, respite stays, treatments and the progression of illness.
Like the ferries cyclically arriving and departing in this an enigmatic landscape, the film appears buoyant, afloat. Care and ultimately death are shown to be natural and everyday but also unspeakable and strange.
Free popcorn. Tea, coffee and cake on sale.

INTENSIVE CARE: a week of talks, films and events focusing on our relationship with caring
From 23-27 October Care(less) will be exhibited at the Castle in Lincoln as part of Frequency Festival and will not be available to view at Fabrica. Instead we’ll be looking at care in its broadest sense. As part of this week, three selected films consider care and the human condition, how it impacts relationships and explores subjects as 'carers' or 'dependents'. Whether young, old, or ill, the stories these films tell reflect how care may present itself in our lives.
We recommend booking in advance for this event as places are limited.
Bookings can also be made in during gallery opening hours by speaking to a member of the gallery team or at Fabrica during office hours.
Once paid for, tickets are non-refundable.
