In Czech with English subtitles

The succesful debut of Czech director Tomáš Luňák, inspired by the graphic novel of the same name won number of awards and was also submitted as the Czech entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards. The animation and visual style are the most captivating features of this film. It was created using a special technique - rotoscoping (a technique when the film is first shot with live-action actors and then the animator traces over moving picture footage frame by frame), which brilliantly adds to the realistic atmosphere of the whole story. Kirk Honeycutt even called the film “a sheer wonder”.

The story is set at the end of summer in 1989. The loner Alois Nebel works at a small railway station in Jeseníky mountains where he enjoys the peace and loneliness of his work – except when the fog crawls in. In those moments he sees ghosts and shadows of the dark past of the region, where after WWII the locals executed harsh revenge on the German population. His hallucinations get him admitted to a sanatorium, where he meets the mysterious Mute, who illegally crossed the borders carrying an axe with the intention to get a revenge for his mother. After Alois gets better and leaves the sanatorium, he finds himself in a world that he does not recognize – the Communist regime has fallen together with the Iron Wall and without a job or a place to stay he decided to go get help from the railway headquarters in Prague. Here he meets the love of his life – Květa the toilet custodian – and together they return back to the mountains to find the Mute and search for closure with the darkness that has been haunting him for so long.

Organized in collaboration with Bohemian Benevolent & Literary Association.
