Event description

Description

We will be traveling to the FIHAV Trade Show again this year. October 28 - October 31, 2018. FIHAV is the largest annual multi-sector trade fair in the Caribbean and last year it brought over 1000 companies from 70 countries. Since our last trip we have made inroads in connecting with the Cuban Ambassador based in Washington, DC and others from the Cuban Ministry of Trade. Opportunities in the Caribbean, Latin America and Africa will be discussed.

The registration fee includes the facilitation of meetings and some transportation to the Trade Fair. You are responsible for your airbnb and airfare.

Traveling to Havana, Cuba is much improved. Many US airlines fly there--Southwest, Jet Blue, American. Delta has a nonstop from Atlanta. Your airline will provide your visa and your mandatory health insurance. You may stay in an airbnb.com.

  • A.T.M.s are few and far between in Cuba, and many establishments are unable to process U.S. credit card payments. So cash will be king for some time to come.
  • Currency from your Country of origin. (Note that US dollars are subject to a 10% surcharge when exchanging, so travelers from the USA may consider exchanging to another currency, but only if the exchange rates result in a savings.)
  • Parallel Currencies CUC (Cuban Convertible Pesos) and the CUP (Cuban Peso) 1 CUC = 24 CUP. You are unlikely to come across, or need, the CUP if you are staying at a resort hotel.
  • Changing money at the airport could be a 2 hour adventure. Change your money when you arrive at a hotel.
  • Bug Repellent.
  • Drink bottled water
  • Photo and video cameras
  • Internet/Cell Phone: The Internet is slow and in and out. Calls on the Etecsa network, the Cuban state-owned telecommunications company are expensive and buying a temporary phone could have you standing in a long line. Sprint and Verizon Wireless have roaming agreements in Cuba. At more than $2 per minute for voice calls. Cell phones can be rented from Cubacel which are located in the airport. Cubacel charges a one-time refundable fee of $100, daily fee of $10 and $1.85 per minute calls outside of Cuba. Etecsa now has dozens of Wi-Fi spots around Havana, meaning you can, in theory, make a VoIP call as long as half of Cuba isn’t trying to do the same thing. Internet can be accessed at small internet cafes which charges $2 per hour however connection speed can be slow. Hotel Miramar also has wi-fi connection on all executive rooms and in the lobby.
  • Americans can now bring back up to $400 in souvenirs, including $100 worth of cigars and rum combined.
  • Cubans welcome gifts, however, small. Gift giving is an island tradition.
