Event description

Description

Fighting for Peace: Countering Hate, Violence and Extremismis is a conference to learn about the regional threats of violent extremism. We will discuss what draws people to violent extremism and how to help people escape violent extremism. Rushan Abbas will tell us about the Uyghur people of western China and the effects of being wrongfully incarcerated. Jesse Morton, a former propagandist for al-Qaeda, will then share how he found susceptible people and recruited them to al-Qaeda. Tony McAleer, a founder of Life After Hate, will share his journey into and out of White Nationalism. Then all three plenary speakers will participate in a moderated discussion showing what draws people to violent ideologies and what we can do to help people escape extremist's recruiting efforts.

Attendees who have lunch tickets will have an opportunity to eat with one of the three plenary speakers. The afternoon sessions will include a moderated Christian/Muslim/Jewish clergy panel to discuss how these religious communities can help mitigate the attraction of violent extremism. This will be followed by a moderated panel of policy-makers and law enforcement to learn what resources are in place to help our community avoid violent extremism in all of its forms.

More information on the event, the schedule and speakers can be found on the Fight for Peace Resource Page. https://library.louisville.edu/Fighting_for_Peace (This is still under construction so check back for updated information)

FAQs

How can I contact the organizer with any questions?

For questions about this event please write to martin.brooks@peacecatalyst.org

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

Printing your ticket is not necessary but will speed the process of checking people into the event.

Is my registration fee or ticket transferrable?

If you cannot attend, our preference is that you update your registration saying that you will not be able to attend, thus allowing those on the waiting list to attend on a first-come-first-served basis.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Parking on the University of Louisville campus is very limited. Most areas require a student or faculty sticker on your vehicle. Some parking is available in the parking garage behind the Speed Museum but the attendee will be responsible for paying for parking. TARC also serves the campus.
